There are few better entry points into the heart-warming world of contemporary Lunar New Year comedies than The Snowball on a Sunny Day, one of the hits that gave the Hong Kong box office a surge this spring.

Every year, Muiday (Elaine Jin) asks her granddaughter Sunnie (Chung Suet-ying) to buy the same ticket for the Lunar New Year lottery. This time, overwhelmed by her job on a chaotic film set, Sunnie can’t get one in time and is shocked to see her grandmother’s numbers win the draw. Seeing the ‘win’ as a way of keeping her strained family together, Sunnie pretends she bought the ticket as instructed and has to maintain the illusion of their new millionaire lifestyle.

With a star-studded cast led by Elaine Jin (Yi Yi, A Brighter Summer Day), the film is a love-letter to filmmaking and a perceptive satire of family life in the rapidly changing environment of 2020s Hong Kong.

Followed by online Q&A with Philip Yung and Chung Suet-ying.
