Co-organised by

Objective:

Learn to respect cultural diversity and minority people's voices through international short films

Concept & Content:

Documentaries often provide the space and power for different individuals, and especially minorities, to share their experiences and speak up about their opinions.  As such, different communities with different cultural backgrounds can have a chance to listen to and gain a better understanding of each other.  The current workshop, led by documentary director Fredie Chan, will invite participants to listen to the voices of different minority groups in international short films, and think about how moving images can help us to share personal stories and emotions in a strange environment.

Duration: 2 hours | 2 小時

Related films:

CLARA CHEUNG & GUM CHENG
(CLARA AND GUM ARE VISUAL ARTISTS AND INDEPENDENT CURATORS, WHO FOUNDED C & G ARTPARTMENT IN HONG KONG IN 2007 AND RELOCATED TO THE UK IN 2021).

DATE:
28 MARCH 2023 (TUE) 17:00-19:00

VENUE:
SAAN1, 5 KELVIN ST, MANCHESTER, M41ET

Concept & Content:

Each movie, short film, animation, commercial, or ‘shorts/reels’ requires at least 25 to 30 frames each second to play quickly and continuously for its formation.  It sounds easy, but the actual process is more complicated.  In making stop-motion animation, one has to think clearly about each  step of the photos they take.

Two to three short animations and films will be shared with the participants in this Film Appreciation Workshop, followed by a discussion led by the artist-instructor to analyse the different techniques applied in the short films.  Elements from the films will be depicted as part of the materials for each participant to create a 10-second-long animation for the participants to experience what they learn from an appreciation for their art-making.

Related animations:

“The Square City | 四方城” (6 min)
“Depths Of Night | 極夜” (13 min)

Duration: 2 hours

(30-40 mins of short animation / film appreciation + 20-30 animation appreciation & discussion 1 hour stop-motion animation workshop )
